oh sweet suz! a girl after my own heart (ah... there's one). i actually own an antique English Idioms book. Couldn't find cockles in there.
how about... at the top of my lungs. I feel like there's a lot of yelling at the top of someone's lungs around here. I say it all the time and I can't anatomically figure it out.
I believe cockles are a type of snail. Just kidding. But it would seem that it may have something to do with the cochlear shape of the inner parts of the ear. Maybe it was believed that the heart was similarly shaped inside. I'm just throwing this out there.
